Family Reunion and Feasting
Family feast is an important tradition during Thanksgiving. The entire family sits at the table during dinner and offer prayer to the Lord Almighty for his continuous grace. It is also a time for relatives living in different places to come together and celebrate.

Tradition of Turkey
The traditional stuffed turkey adorns every dinner table during the feast. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere to mark the day. Though historians don’t have an evidence to prove that turkey was eaten during the first Thanksgiving dinner, but the thanksgiving celebration will be incomplete without it.

Parades
The traditional Thanksgiving parade probably started with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day. The full- dress parade is a way to display the country’s military strength and discipline. The main aim of such parades is to lift the spirits of the spectators, provide them with wholesome entertainment. In the present day, parades are accompanied with musical shows and celebrities.

Football Games
Watching NFL football during Thanksgiving is a popular tradition. The traditional game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers continues. One of the most memorable games having been played on this day.

“Trick or treat” is the familiar cry we hear on Halloween from children dressed up masquerading as ghosts, goblins, and other scary of fascinating creatures. Today it is a day for fun!
Years ago it was a celebration that was associated with a religious holiday. The Halloween colors are orange and black, and the grinning Jack-o’-lantern comes in all shapes and sizes. The Irish brought this holiday to the United States. In Ireland, they didn’t have pumpkins; instead they used gourds and hollowed -out beets to light their way on this dark night. They light served as a protection.
In Mexico, this holiday is referred to as the “Day of the Dead”, a day in which families go to the graves of their ancestors to clean them and tend to the plantings. The families leave breads and other tasty treats for the departed relatives who are said to come back to visit on that night. At the end of the celebration- whem the cemetery has been cleaned the families open their baskets, spread their tablecloths on the ground, and have a meal in memory of their ancestors.

This is when we celebrate the birthday of the United States of America.
Starting four hundred years ago, people from Europe came to live in America. They formed thirteen colonies on the east coast.

A colony is an area of land ruled by another country. These colonies were ruled by Britain, a European country. The British government told the people in the colonies to send them money for taxes. This made the colonists angry. They refused to pay the taxes. The thirteen colonies decided it was time to break free from Britain. They wanted to make their own rules. This caused the Revolutionary War to begin in America in 1775.

Future U.S. President Thomas Jefferson wrote a document called the Declaration of Independence. This paper said the colonies were no longer under British rule. The colonies were creating the United States of America.American leaders voted to accept the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776. But it took seven more years before the United States was completely free from Britain’s rule.

Church bells rang out in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 4th , 1777. It was the nation’s first birthday.
Fireworks lit up the sky. Ships fired their cannons.

These noisy Fourth of July customs soon spread to other cities. In 1870, Independence Day bacame a U.S. holiday

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It is a  day of remembrance for those who have died in the service of  our Nation.

Waterloo N.Y. Was  officially declared the birthplace of Memorial day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, but it’s  difficult to prove the origins of the day. There is also evidence that a women’s group in the South decorated graves before the end of the Civil War.

In either case, Memorial Day  has had numerous starts due to the human need to honor the dead. Though some people think it’s a day to honor any and all dead, Memorial Day is intended to honor those who have given their all in service to aur contry.

MATER

deixas cascatear desse olhar carinhoso

todo o Jordão do teu amor.

E espalham tanto brilho as asas infinitas

Olavo Bilac (1865-1918)
